CMS was founded in 2012 to unlock the value in vehicle data to reduce insurance and claims costs. Today, we remain focused on delivering easy-to-digest and action real-time data in a consistent format to bring unique benefits to our customers. Our diverse management team, with its experience in fast moving technology sectors and rapid growth businesses, ensures CMS is secure in its future while continuing to innovate.

Our Senior Team



John Owen, Chairman

John started his career with Andersen Consulting and then worked for both UBS and Bankers Trust in the 90’s before becoming one of the founding partners of Capco, the successful global financial services consultancy. Subsequent roles include Global COO of ING’s Wholesale Bank, CEO of Venture Capital data company Library House (prior to purchase by Dow Jones) and Group COO and FD of Matrix Group. Recently, John has established a number of Renewable Energy ESCO's and is an active investor in other start-up’s in the Fin Tech space. He is currently the European COO of Stifel.

Charles Smith, CEO

Charles is the founder and driving force behind CMS taking it from concept to successful funding and sales success. His technical background and work in fleet and insurance sectors has given him a deep knowledge of telematics and vehicle data, along with an unprejudiced take on the claims environment. This provides him with a unique understanding of how digital transformation will reshape future commercial models and services.

Steve Johnson, CFO / COO

Steve is responsible for the overall financial and operational control of CMS. Having started his career with top five UK accountancy practice, Grant Thornton, Steve became Finance Director of Bluewater, then Head of Commercial Finance for RES European Retail Development. Since then, Steve has provided finance leadership to private equity and venture capital backed early stage and high growth businesses including the Speciality Retail Group, Clarity Credit Management Solutions and PPI Claimline. Steve is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Rory Maher, Sales Director

Rory joined CMS in August 2017 and has overall responsibility for CMS's sales and marketing strategy and for building relationships with telematics service providers and OEMs. Rory is a hands on, experienced and successful sales leader with over 20 years experience with the likes of Trimble Navigation, Vodafone and Cable and Wireless. At Trimble he led the sale and delivery of telematics solutions for some of the UK’s largest commercial fleets.

Chris Butchart, Head of Development

Chris is responsible for the management and delivery of CMS's development team based in Dundee, he is also a Director of M2M Cloud, CMS's development partner. With over 15 years’ commercial software experience, he has been involved in connected sensor solutions since 2005, focusing primarily on processing data from telematics and asset security devices. Chris supports CMS full time, facilitating integrations with third party systems, and modelling and implementing crash filtering algorithms.

Alastair Fraser, Research Manager

Alastair is responsible for the delivery of many of CMS's research streams, working closely with the development team and many of the universities CMS has research partnerships with. A software design specialist, an electronics engineer and astrophysicist, he has worked for BAe Space Systems designing scientific instruments for Spacecraft and founded successful software companies focussed on Machine-to-Machine solutions.

Alison Hanley, PR & Marketing

Alison has extensive experience managing international campaigns for global brands and dynamic technology start-ups. With a track record in marcomms, content development and strategic planning, she has worked for the likes of Motorola, Microsoft, IBM, Verifone and Digital Realty. Alison is no stranger to the automotive sector having handled campaigns for Shell and the BVRLA. She provides comprehensive consultancy to CMS, driving awareness and building its reputation with customers, partners and influencers.

Colin Woolmer, Product Director

Colin leads the product development of CMS’s data aggregation, crash detection and risk analytics solutions. Prior to CMS, Colin was Director of Technology at TeletracNavman (formerly Trafficmaster), where he helped develop stolen vehicle tracking, eCall, bCall, navigation and concierge services for the OEM/automotive sector. He has extensive experience in cloud-based software development and architecture, gained managing technical projects for utilities, telecoms, automotive and financial services and working for high-profile brands including the AA, BT and Jaguar Land Rover.
